SherieParticipantWhy do public restrooms continue to have gender specific signs when there are more than two genders?

Ann L. LowensteinParticipantSince when? Last I checked, there are males and females, irrespective of whatever politically correct horsecrap folks like you want to shove down people’s throats. Public restrooms are based on biological fact, not the way YOU think the world should be.

Teresa28653ParticipantIf there are more than the ‘male’ (pants) and ‘female’ (dress) genders, then please show the rest of us unlightened folks how to portray one of these other genders in a distinct manner, so that we may not walk into the wrong restroom.

Dave28761ParticipantBecause most people don’t really accept the definition of ‘gender’ that is implicit in your question. Most people consider gender to be a physical thing you are born with, independent of how you feel about it–a function of DNA, or at a very minimum external genetalia. (Yes, there are people who are not XX or XY and have physically ambiguous gender, but they are truly rare.) Most people think that gender cannot be changed at all, or that it can only be changed by radical surgery. The concept of gender as encompassing more than this is not widely accepted. And as a practical matter, women don’t want to see men using urinals, and men want the convenience of urinals, so we have separate bathrooms.

Cal28641ParticipantThere are only two sexes, male and female, and they are defined by one’s body parts. If you have male parts, you use the mens room, and if you have female parts you use the womens room. If you are one of the tiny minority that has both, flip a coin. Sure there are transsexuals and homosexuals etc. but do you seriously think that these relatively small minorities need special accommodations? I suppose you could make all restrooms unisex, but what would that accomplish?

Rachel28647ParticipantPerhaps this is because, since that third gender is not (yet) accepted by society, then that person would be too embarrassed or fearful of violent unaccepting lunatics taking their hatred out on them, or afraid of curious stares, or being afraid of being outed to feel that they could freely use a public bathroom created specifically for them. Perhaps too, it could be a case of…why bother? You’re either sitting or standing, either way why should a business budget in a facility for a person of transgender who’s just going in to use the toilet or wash their hands? Lastly, I wonder what you would suggest this third gender-specific sign look like?
