Louis C.ParticipantDo gay and lesbian members of the service wish to be segregated – i.e. separate showering and sleeping areas – until their value and integrity to the military are recognized and proven?

Cindy31946ParticipantDo you think straight people in the miliatary should be segregated until they prove themselves? What about people of minority ethnicity backgrounds? Should they be segregated until they prove themselves? Why does one group have to go out of their way to ‘prove’ themselves?

FredMemberGay and straight people have always served well together in the military, and there would be no purpose in segregating us at this point. Incidentally, recent statistics have shown that service members who are discharged for revealing they are gay or bi generally are ranked as better soldiers than the average service member. The only question is whether gay people defending our country be able to be honest and open about their families and significant others. Every other nation in the developed world, and many in the Third World, allow openly gay people to serve, with stronger militaries to show for it. What rationale would there be for segregating the military? Perhaps you ask this because blacks and whites and men and women were segregated in the U.S. military in the past. However, that segregation was based merely on ignorance and prejudice, and I doubt many of us want to go back to those days.

Steve M.ParticipantMany countries do not allow gays in the military. Case in point: Britain is currently undergoing its own “Don’t ask, don’t tell” debate. As for the separate showering and sleeping facilities for gays in the military, think about that: They’d turn into miniature Sodoms. And besides, under the current rules if you applied to live in a gay-only dorm you’d end up revealing yourself as gay and end up drummed out of the military.

tlParticipantI am a bisexual male proudly serving his country, and I can tell you that there is no need or desire for segregation. While it is true that I would be kicked out if my sexual orientation were discovered, I have met and been with several other bisexuals (male and female) and have known many gay and lesbian service members. I personally, nor anyone I know, have any desire to be segregated. We are proud troops, and would not want the fact that our differences in sexuality be a factor in deciding where we shower, live, etc. It would be more like discrimination than what we are currently facing, at least in my opinion.
