Nathan H.ParticipantIs it a fashion, or an identifying thing, when gay men wear shirts carrying the logo of Ivy League schools they did not attend? I seem to see it a lot with the gay men I know, and on television also.

BillTMemberAs a gay man and graduate of a ‘little Ivy’ college (Williams College), I think this is more a preppy thing that has been adopted by some gay men who have also adopted the preppy look. It is very common in preppy circles to wear clothing from any well-known school, kind of saying, ‘I could have gone here.’ This grows out of the phenomenon of students buying clothing from every school they visit or apply to.

ZacParticipantI’d assume anyone who wears a piece of clothing with an Ivy League school’s logo or name on it who did not attend the school is wearing it out of vanity. They’re associating themselves with a prestigious institution in hopes that they’ll seem prestigious as well. Or maybe they’re a fan of that school and want to show support. Or maybe they just like the colors (I wear two sweatshirts from colleges I did not attend because they were gifts and are comfortable). Regardless, I don’t see this activity associated with gay men more than any other group.

StanleyParticipantI believe that people wear clothing with school’s logos on them when they didn’t attend that school for a variety of reasons, having nothing to do with sexual orientation. I wear a shirt that I bought at an Ivy League school when I toured the campus, and wear it just like any other shirt I bought on vacation symbolizing the places I’ve been.
