AlmaParticipantPresident Bush wants to place a constitutional ban on same-sex marriages; stating he considers gay marriage a threat to the definition of the term. As a Gay American, I find it hilarious when someone says our attempts for equality will endanger a heterosexual’s right to marriage. What am I going to do, jump between a man and woman and shout, “My God, you’re not gay; you can’t marry?” Heterosexuals have a 50% divorce rate and I’m a threat?? My life-partner and I have endured cruel jokes, name-calling, attempts to fire us from our jobs, physical threats, tire-slicing, and loss of job advancement for the right to be openly loving to each other for over 21 years. WE ARE A FAMILY. Without the right to marry, protection for medical and memorial issues as a couple is not guaranteed for us. We can only enlist the help of a living trust and hope no one will make efforts to fight it in the event of one of us passing away. We have watched too many other gay couples stand hopelessly by and watch as biological family members strip them of their homes, cars, bank accounts, memories and any hope of financial survival when their life-partners died. And these were people who had been together for 20 and 30-plus years. This proposed ban is blatant, outright discrimination. It is solely intended to hurt Americans who work hard, pay taxes and support their country. This action is not just mean-spirited; it is a spit in the face of the constitution. If you think President Bush’s’ efforts are limited to Gay Americans, remember your history. Until 1968, interracial marriage was illegal in this country. If this ban passes, how long do you think it will take Bush to say, “Oh, by the way…………???”
