Mary20841ParticipantI think the hardest thing to deal with is not being able to walk down the street hand in hand with my girlfriend, the love of my life, without getting the glares, hearing the whispers and getting the occasional comments. I would love to be able to give my girlfriend a gentle kiss on the lips while we are in a store or parking lot, but unless we are in a certain few places in Vermont, people look at us like we have lobsters crawling out of our ears.

FreedaBeeParticipantI have to say it’s probably the sudden or unexpected death of a loved one. The hardest things for me to deal with as a gay person are the same things that are hard for heterosexuals to deal with. Why would they be any different? Many people have a misconception that being gay is all we are, while it’s really no more significant than being short or having green eyes. I’m sure that straight people don’t always dwell on their heterosexuality (‘Do these pants make me look straight?’; ‘I wonder if people at work know that I’m straight?’; ‘Wow! She’s hot! I wonder if she’s straight?’; ‘Gee, we’d really like to get married, but we can’t because we’re straight.’) I believe people who have questions and think we lead exotic, secret gay lives don’t think they know any of us. They wonder where the gay people are and what the heck they’re doing. Forget what you see on TV, in the movies or on the news. That’s just hyped-up, blow-out-of-proportion junk. The reason you don’t see us is because you’re looking in the wrong place – the truth is that we’re standing right in front of you. Real gay people are just the plain old boring people you see everyday…we go to work, mow the lawn, do some shopping, take the kids to soccer, throw in a load of laundry and sleep in on Saturdays. We are exactly like you.

Jordan28716ParticipantMost of my problems have little or nothing to do with my sexuality. Speaking solely within the borders of issues directly connected to sexual orientation, though, the hardest thing for me to deal with is how little people know, even at this point. I still come across the people who think that I choose my orientation, and it infuriates me.
