Do descendants of frontier settlers in the western United States look with disdain upon people who move there from elsewhere? Those who settled the West endured months-long journeys just to get there, then the hardships of settling once they arrived. Not everyone survived the trip, or if they did, not everyone ‘had what it took’ to stay and settle, so they went back East. If my ancestors had undergone such suffering, I’m not so sure I’d have a lot of respect for people who go out West, see the ‘wide open spaces’, scenery, and clean air, and decide to move there simply as a lifestyle choice. And do the Mormons, who migrated there in large groups, have any thoughts on this?
