Recently a National Hockey League player was reprimanded for calling a French-Canadian player a ‘Frog.’ Until now, I wasn’t totally aware that this was any sort of insult, let alone an ethnic slur. What is the history and meaning behind that particular slur?

French-Canadians were called frogs in an insulting manner by English-Canadians because in the French culture they eat frog legs. In retaliation, the French-Canadians came up with the insult ‘pissou,’ which comes from pea soup and means coward.
