Here’s why people take offense to the phrase ‘you people’: because often times it is used in a prejudiced sense. For example, ‘Why do you people always get chicken wings and french fries at a Chinese food place?’ or ‘Why do you people all talk so loud at the movies?’. The ‘you people’ is used to lump a whole race of people together, and makes the person being addressed the involuntary spokesperson for their race. Granted, ‘you people’ can be used in a completely different context, like ‘You people need to have your boarding passes out, but you people will have to wait for standby tickets.’ It can be just another way to say ‘you’. But some have heard it used so often in the negative context that any use of it sounds racist.
