Why is it that young people in Washington, DC introduce themselves by their first names only? When I lived there I might have neighbors or even casual acquaintances (friends of friends, etc.) who’d never told me their last names and had forgotten mine when I first introduced myself to them. My first and last name are both a part of who I am and I introduce myself that way; so do most people in South Carolina. The only thing I was ever able to figure out is that many people in Washington have hard-to-spell ethnic names and don’t want to burden the other person with them. My wife has a difficult ethnic maiden surname; it’s part of who she is and I would expect people to learn how to pronounce and spell it. What am I missing here? Shouldn’t diversity awareness include getting familiar with unfamiliar names?
