ChadParticipantTo people of various religions: How do you feel when you are made fun of about your religion?

Priscilla30289ParticipantChad, I admit I sometimes have a go at Christians because it is a threat to me – as a non-heterosexually identifying person. That’s the motivation. It’s nothing personal. The people who make fun of you probably also see your religion as a threat to whatever they are doing. I think if you make an effort to be accepting and non-judgemental, yourself, (which you could be doing, I can’t say you’re not, I don’t know you), I think that will help.

Dan27294ParticipantI usually get defensive. If I overhear it on the street, it feels like it cuts to the bone and I start to think ‘if only they could understand what my friends and I are all about, then they wouldn’t say such things’. If it’s said to my face, I’ll try to stay calm and rational yet it still cuts to the bone; not so much the criticisms, but the attitude behind them. If it’s over an internet chatboard that I frequent, I’ll usually go on a mission to ‘set them straight’. Then it turns into a long drawn out battle that wears me out. But I must also remind myself that before I was a Christian, I used to do the same things. Now that I think about it, I vaguely remember spitting in a girl’s Bible back in junior high. It just goes to show that anyone can come around.

Victor C.MemberI usually don’t have a problem with people making fun of me or my religion. If people question my beliefs, I try to explain. A suggestion would be to get them to tell you about their religion and discuss similarities and differences. Create an understanding between people of the different religions. Begin to communicate.

AmmaParticipantWhen i am made fun of my religion I feel sad for the person who is doing it to me. If anyone feels the need to put down someone for their beliefs they are obviously not secure in their own beliefs.

JackMemberPeople fear my religion because they do not understand them (I mean, look at what it’s called, it’s very easy to misinterpret it!). I usually don’t take offense unless I try to explain and they refuse to listen. People oftentimes get really defensive, as if my worshiping ‘the devil’ is an attack on them. Of course, unless they’re trying to lynch me, it’s not exactly causing a huge problem for me anyway.
