I once read somewhere that barns were painted red because in the early days of paint-making red was cheaper to manufacture and was therefore sold at a lower price.

Paint for barns was originally cassein paint, made from the left over or stale milk. It was kept in a container and colored red with iron oxide, from rusty iron, as in nails etc. added to the milk. Just a way of putting something to use that would have been throw away in today’s world.
