ReneeParticipantI work in a public library. A kid comes into the library a lot that behaves inappropriately – as in being loud, climbing on furniture, being extremely rude to the people who work in our department, bugging other kids who are on the computer. When the librarians react to his behavior, he accuses us of ‘hatin’ and racism. He yelled loudly yesterday that we ‘always target the black people’. I understand that this kid is trying to get our attention at any cost, but it makes me angry that he accuses us of racism when he is the one causing problems. He knows nothing of my background or of the fact that I have strived to combat racism for most of my life. A similar situation occured with a friend of mine. Her white musician boyfriend, who has a goatee (which I understand to originate from the jazz era) was accused of being a Nazi by a black man. What goes?
