The theory of the evolution of the species has overwhelming evidence to support it. How can it be that in this day and age, and in America, no less, this theory is viscerally opposed and categorically dismissed by a vast number of people, whose arguments against it seem to me appallingly evocative of the Middle Ages?

I agree with you and it is scary how ignorance can parade as true religion. I have been watching a lot of education DVDs and reading books on Darwin, genetics and evolution. It’s clear that everything in nature evolves. We evolve from a single fertilized cell. Plants and animals evolve to maturity. It’s Darwinism that some religious folks object to. According to my research, it’s primarily in America that Christian fundamentalists deny Darwinism because it conflicts with a literal reading of Creation. I’m not sure why Europeans have less trouble accepting Darwinism. Those of us who interpret the bible more metaphorically have little problem reconciling religion with evolution. Just Curious

Yes, we have a few whack jobs in the US. Gratefully they aren’t the majority and there are still those who realize that science is important. You probably have been fed an erroneous perception about the US because of a few high profile radicals like Sarah Palin. Most of us aren’t that stupid and don’t wish to fall behind the rest of world because of the religious superstitions of a few. Even most “Christians” understand that Evolutionary Biology and stem cell research are key to the survival of our species.
