HannahMemberIf they are, it would be absoloutely ridiculous… because locks didn’t originate with Rastafarians. Dreadlocks have been around for thousands of years. King Tut had them! Vikings and Celts sported locks long before they were a symbol of devotion to God. Sure nappy hair locks easier, but that doesn’t mean the people with nappy hair have the right to claim ownership of a particular hairstyle. I’ve had dreadlocks for almost a year, and have received nothing but compliments from black people. I would just suggest keeping them clean and moderately tidy if you don’t want to offend anyone.

Nazlah HassanParticipantLet’s drop the word ‘dread’ in locs, there is nothing dreadful about our locs. For many, locing is a lifestyle. Recently it has become a hairstyle for many. Black people wonder why whites want to wear locs. I believe black people are more offended by the way white (and some blacks for that matter) folks’ locs look. Of course though, anyone has the right to wear their hair as they choose. It is advisable to learn something about the history of locs before starting the process.
