CraigMemberRecently a friend was accused of being ‘the white man’s whore’ because she (who is mixed) married someone who was white. One guy said that whenever he saw a black woman with a white guy, all he could think about was the white slave owners who raped their slaves. It seems to be reaching a little, because this is hardly the situation now, and especially because I don’t see the same attitude with black men and white women. Can someone who believes this explain it?

Floyd L.MemberThe tremendous range of shades of skin color among African Americans does not result from recent generation interracial encounters, but from the centuries of white males raping black females, extending across the 250 year duration of slavery and indeed for a time thereafter, as blacks came out of slavery with barely more real rights and hardly any security. The black female had no choices nor did she have any defenses. Her denying the white male’s advances meant physical brutalization and ofter death. Any black males coming to her defense risked almost certain death. So she and her black male counterparts stood helpless. With few exceptions the progeny of these encounters received no support from their biological fathers, and often became slaves themselves. It should strike us all as being strange that a father would enslave his own children, unless of course he saw them as being sub-human. That the white male could use the black female as just a vessel for his sexual release, while seeing her as incapable of producing an offspring which he could claim as human and his own, reduced her, the source of every black’s humanity, to something less than human. The fact that the white male so dehumanized the black female is, in the black psyche, one of the greatest evils of slavery. Black men have abused no women as the white male abused the black female, so you are not going to see the same attitude with black men and white women. Neither has the black female been so abused by anyone other then the white male, so her having relations with nonwhite males will not generate the same seminal negative reaction as one with a white male will generate. Until there is a perception that the white male has made amends for his misdeeds, the reactions to the relations you described will continue. ‘The evil that men do lives long after…’, noting Shakespeare. The white male’s behavior induced among blacks a microcosm of this country’s broader racial turmoil, with the strife of color and class distinctions among blacks mirroring that seen in the larger world. The result of a single sexual encounter can last for all human time. Seeing and enduring the consequences of actions several centuries old is not that much of a reach as you would claim. It happens all the time. Just think about it for a while.

Gregory-H21598ParticipantI feel that way to an extent as well. My experience growing up in southern Virginia was that whites and blacks did not mix socially. Whites in general treated black folks like dirt, and would not want to be associated with them as friends, yet white men had no problem hitting on black women in very sexually suggestive ways. Couple that with my family history–a high percentage of white blood in both sides of my family due to rape by white men, and my mother and grandmother’s recollections of hiding when working/playing outside and white men came riding by because it was known that they would grab black girls and rape them. I grew up knowing which white families in town I was related to, but there was never any contact with them, and there was never any acknowledge of any kinship. I personally find it difficult to imagine how a person can know all this and not have any issues with it. I wouldn’t go so far as to call your friend a white man’s whore unless she dated white men exclusively. And I did know of several women who were, essentially, white men’s whores—they were the playthings of white men who didn’t even acknowledge knowing them when they saw one another at the market.

Sarah-Jayne28387ParticipantThat is an incredibly old-fashioned view and people should move with the times.

DanielleParticipantpeople think that black women go after white men for their money. Maybe whoever had the nerve to say that is jealous that they are happy together.
