I was just reading CNN.com’s Education section and it had two interesting stories back to back. The first dealt with The Citadel (the formerly all-male military school) and how female enrollment was increasing. And the latter was about how ‘all girls’ schools are making a comeback.’ So why is there such a double standard in regards to gender equality? When The Citadel issue erupted a few years back, all these girls were clamoring to enter an all boys school. Yet I sincerely doubt that any guy would successfully get into an all girls school. In addition, this double standard seems to be quite pervasive throughout the education system. All the way back in Junior High School, there was no girls’ football team and no guys’ volleyball team. If girls wanted to play football they could play on the guys team. But if guys wanted to play volleyball then too bad. And at my High School, girls could play on the guys’ football team but guys couldn’t play on the girls’ badminton team. Even in college you can find co-ed dorms and all girls dorms but for some reason there are no all guys dorms?
