Adrian PetytParticipantActually The Authorised Version, like the plays of Shakespeare, is in early modern English, Old English was the language of the ancient Anglo Saxon tribes and would seem like archaic German to a modern listener. As to the translation of Hebrew and Greek in the Bible, it was of varying accuracy. The commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’ is more precisely rendered ‘thou shalt not commit murder’ (i.e. kill another person for your own personal reasons). That killing in the name of God is not forbidden is made very plain in that as soon as Moses came down the mountain with his tablets and found people worshipping an idol he had the Levites ‘put their swords by their sides’ and slay ‘every man his neighbour’ to the tune of some 3000 misguided folks. Moses gave no sign of feeling he’d broken a commandment.

J21679ParticipantIt is my understanding that it is permissible to kill in war if absolutely necessary, but that war should be avoided until it cannot be avoided any longer. However, I have been taught and firmly believe that the killing of another human being outside of a wartime setting is in no way permitted, under any circumstance.

Suzanne RootParticipantI believe it means thou shalt not kill human beings. In Genesis it states Adam and Eve were given dominion over all the animals. I believe the Commandment means don’t kill humans, which is why I am against the death penalty and abortion, don’t kill means don’t kill. Especially innocents.

DwannyParticipantI don’t think a lot of ppl pratice what they preach. Muslims, Jews, and Christians all are told not to kill, but look at Israel and Palistine. Ireland-Catholics and Protestants. I’m sure there are other examples. Christians also are not supposed to judge others, but there’s a whole lot of that going around lately.
