To people with a disability: Does it (or do you let it) keep you from doing something you really want to do?

I lost my right leg when I was nearly 17. I use a prosthesis often, but sometimes get out on crutches because I feel more free that way. There’s nothing I can’t do, but I might do it in a different way – like hop across the room carrying two cups of coffee (takes practice!). I’m a university student, and no one really cares if I come in on crutches. I can compete in swimming, too – and I’ve tried wheelchair basketball. My dad, who was born in China, tells me that Chinese culture tried to hide disabled people in the past. But here in Australia, people are out in wheelchairs, or on prostheses. No one here seems to wear prosthetic arms, but every leg amputee wears a prosthesis, now without cosmetic covering, because they are so high-tech and slim. I can’t see how such disabilities would stop anyone.

In my case, yes, they stop me from doing things like hiking, biking and lots of things around the house. But you learn to adapt and appreciate the things you CAN do!

People who are ‘handicapped’ are only as much as they wish to be. I am deaf, and my son and daughter are deaf. But if you think this in any way stops us from doing what we choose to accomplish, you better think again. There are people all over the world who overcome their disabilties. First, it doesn’t take any talent to sit in a corner and suck your thumb. What does take courage is to take the cards you are dealt with and play them well. My children at your age could read at college level. NO BRAG (OK, maybe.) Besides that, where is it written that, disabled or not, you can’t accomplish your heart’s desire? The one thing I have learned is that the only person who can stop you from your dreams is YOU!

A friend of mine has a condition that means he will go blind, and his sight is already failing. He is therefore doing all the things he wants to do before his sight goes completely. He’s a fan of extreme sports, so he’s got to try them before his sight goes or he can’t do most of them. He’s done loads and is loving every minute. The more extreme the disability, of course, the less you can do. But as someone has already pointed out, you make the most of what you can do.
