I definantly notice certain smells on certain individuals of different races. Especially Indians who eat a lot of curry and Asains. I work in a pretty sterile environment and when these patients come in to the office it is very noticeable. On the other hand peoples with certain diseases smell a certain way too. If someone has untreated periodontal disease I can smell it across a room. Not pretty. Women on their monthly cycle also can give off a certain odor and not always offensive, but usually. So its not always a nationality or race issue. Just my two cents worth. CC

Here’s my best attempt at a race/odor breakdown. Caucasians: Whatever kind of cheap cologne or perfume they’re loaded down with; sometimes peanuts. Blacks: Coconut or hairspray. Mexicans: Salsa or chili-cheese Fritos. Indians: Curry or armpit. Asians: Bullion cubes. Candadians: Completely and utterly odorless. Germans: Straight-up B.O. Jews: Dollar bills. Eskimoes: Ice Cubes

Anecdote: While going to train in a martial art in Japan, my teacher noted that I may consider cutting back on dairy products before going, because to East Asians, white people tend to smell like rotten milk. He noted this while he was previously stationed in Korea and his Korean girl told him as such. Cheers…

Russians often have a smell of garlic around them. I vote for diet being the biggest influence. Of course, according to the sniffer dog at many airports, Muslim males sometimes smell like Nitro-Glycerin or Semtex. They don’t eat it, so go figure…

What bigotry. Your ‘distinct odors’ are merely a bunch of poorly lumped together stereotypes — for example, everyone knows tht Asians smell like noodles, Black people smell like fried chicken and Native Americans smell like booze. Try to not spout this kind of thinly-veiled racist dribble.

Hate to break it to you, but ALL races are ‘basically the same type of people’…this in’t PC feel-goodism, but scientific fact: there is as much if not more genetic difference between two unrelated individuals of any one race than there is between people of different races. The entire concept of ‘Race’ is a social construct and there are very few differences between the races that aren’t entirely cosmetic, or the result of isolation and inbreeding in a specific locality. And the person who said that cocoa butter was used for skin care by blacks was right on the money- black skin gets a condition called ‘ash’ when it gets dry, it turns a chalky/scaly white and cocoa butter is a preferred treatment. Go to the black hair/skin care section of any drugstore and you will find an abundance of skin care products containing cocoa butter.

Most people are a product of what they eat, what they wash with, what they put in their hair, their make-up, and gender. So some things can make a person or group smell a certain way. for instance, for many women, if they eat fish, their urine and female areas can take on a stronger smell. The same with asparagus, I believe. (I think that’s the right veggie). Also what a person washes with, or how often the wash, some cultures don’t use deodorant. It’s all relative to their makeup. Don’t even go into the onion and garlic lover’s smell. LOL! Ultimately, You should try and get away from the generalization of a ethnic ‘smell’. You will probably be wrong.

Experiments using garlic have shown that if you rub a clove of garlic on the sole of your foot, an hour later there will be a detectable garlic smell on your breath. The point? If such a tiny amount of garlic can affect your smell I see no reason why certain races (and more importantly, cultures and the sorts of food they tend to eat) should affect their smell. To answer the original question, if white people ate lots of noodles, and asians drank more coffee, I suspect we would all smell differently. So it’s probably not a ‘race’ thing, it’s probably a ‘culture’ thing.

A friend of mine works at an expensive business hotel in Tokyo and part of her job is to go into rooms after they check out to make sure nothing is missing. She swears she can guess the nationality of the person who just checked out solely by smell. Her examples; Koreans-KimChee, French-cologne/perfume, Germans-body odor, Americans-soap or ketchup. But at any rate I think its pretty clear that its due to dietary intake and similarities in cleansing products and not some intrinsic genetic racial smell. I was also told when I was in Japan that a racial slur for white Americans translates as ‘stinking of butter’.

Indians are the smelliest people in the world. I sat next to a dothead onced on the plane and almost died. Waited till he fell asleep and I sprayed him with a lot of cologne.

For the person who said they noticed a stale corn chip smell from some black people, I think it is either their diet or the hair products they use. I’ve noticed this smell usually around women. Black women tend to use some kind of hair grease or oil in their hair, especially if their hair is chemically relaxed, to keep it moisturized. Just my theory, I’ve been to chicken to actually ask anyone who smelled that way.
