JillParticipantI am doing a research paper on why society has stereotyped blondes as being dumb, gullible, ditzy and overly sexually active. Can anyone give me some insight?

ACC23999ParticipantYou might want to take a look at how that stereotype is different from culture to culture. In Latino culture, blondes are thought of as automatically wealthy and spoiled. Dumbness, gullibility and ditziness are not part of it. However, the two stereotypes have the sexually loose part in common.

StjudeParticipantWe have inherited most of our culture from elsewhere, so there may be many sources of the ‘blondes/more fun,’ idea. Maybe, in Italy, blondes, who came from the north, or the more nordic countries, were considered stupid or dumb, and all they know how to do was have fun, because they weren’t smart enough to do much of anything else.? Maybe this transfered to America, via books films and radio.? Maybe, in an old movie, before sound, a blonde character was very ditzie and pretty and fun, and Hollywood just carried the idea through-out the industry. Maybe a woman of olive skin and dark hair was jilted by a lover/or lovers, for the new girl in town, who happened to be blonde… said she was a dumb slut and it just went from there… Depending on the subject, it is hard to trace these kind of ideas start, but, like most things, it is untruthful and started from an generalities

MarkParticipantI am a blonde married to a blonde, and we have two blonde kids. The American upper Midwest is full of blondes. We are not dumb, gullible or ditzy (except when we try to be), nor are we overly sexually active. Our high school and college scores are tops in the country – at least WE think so. Here are some reasons for the stereotypes you mention, after some serious informal observation and reflection: 1) We have long, cold winters and we sometimes do goofy things just to laugh, and rather than laughing at others, we laugh at ourselves. 2) Blondes like being blonde, and we pretend to be dumb, etc. to keep others from becoming blonde artificially! 3) Blondes ARE better looking, which leads non-blondes to think we must be having sex more than they are! 4) Blondes are very self-secure; they think that non-blondes are just teasing them when they think they are dumb, etc. 5) ‘Guys hate to squeeze blackheads.’ The one bad thing about being a blonde guy is that your hair is finer and tends to thin with age, so we look prematurely bald. But then God only made a few perfect heads – the rest He covered with hair!

Rita29689ParticipantI had brown hair all my life and always felt its not good on me even my hair is naturally brown, then one day, wham! I changed my haircolour to blonde and that was what I was lookin for, it suits my skintone. As I stepped out of the salon I was looked at much often than usually, people are nicer,I am more approachamble. Same time I feel less strong than with dark brown hair, I quess Im more shy. I took some black lowlights under my hair and instantly I was more self confident. Quess I have to compromise color between these colors. I havent encounterd any stereotypical stupid as blond stuff, I know girls who change the second a man enters a room to giggling bimbo..Sooo annoying

CristinaParticipantIn Brazil, in general, the blondes are seing as sexy, but dumb. Once, I read in an article that people are used to thinking that blondes are sexy because of Marlyn Monroe – blond woman that turned to a sexy woman icon. Also, I’ve read that the natural blond has the hair more soft and thin, which conotates more delicated and feminine woman. Why they are stereotyped as dumb, I don’t know…
