Do black lesbians use ‘dom’ instead of ‘butch’?

I’m trying to clear up the labeling process amongst lesbians. I was always familiar with the terms ‘butch’ and ‘femme’. Put in the simplest terms possible, the former prefers to wear masculine clothing and the latter feminine. (A more fair and complete definition would be an entirely different subject- please don’t address that here!). However, I very rarely hear black lesbians use the term ‘butch’- instead, they say ‘dom’, as in ‘dominant’ and ‘feminine’. When I first heard this term, I was very offended because as a self-described femme, that would mean that my partner is ‘dom’. She is is no way dominant over me and I resent the insinutation that because she carries herself harder than I do, she is ‘dom’. To me, the opposite of ‘dom’ is ‘submissive’. Black lesbians (my partner included) insist that is not the intended meaning. Where did this term come from? Do other races use it? Is so, where have I been? Is anyone else offended by this? I am disgusted that women would label themselves with such degrading terms. I still cringe internally every time I hear it.
