I’ve learned that growing up in the Bay Area where there is a lot of diversity, my situation may be different from others. However, to me it’s never been a big deal being Muslim when everyone else was not. I do not come from a fundamentalist Islamic family, I do not cover my hair or dress completely covered all of the time. Those aspects may have made me seem more like my classmates than different from them. But at the same time, I did not eat pork, drink alcohol, or celebrate Christmas religiously. Being Muslim provided my classmates a means to learn about my religion and provided me with a way to figure it out for myself as well.
