Melinda ScottParticipantIt’s only important to know that I am 17. I have found that when I am at work, in the doctors office, dealing with customer service, or in many other facets of day to day contact with adults I am often treated like a toddler. People lose their professionalism, change their vocabulary, and sometimes disregard me as if I am a ghost. Recently, when I went Christmas shopping, I was often followed around the store as if I was going to steal and many times I wasn’t even taken seriously when I approached a counter, as if I had no money. (Not to mention that without young people the music and entertainment industry would collapse). I understand that young people may be inexperienced and according to some adults they have little knowledge BUT why do adults feel as if they are much better than young people? There is an arrogance in their treatment of young adults. It is clear that in our society we revere age (as older people being wiser) but you cannot simply go around treating all young people as if they had just been born yesterday. In the context of work, at school, and as a customer I should be treated as an individual. Why is it that I am treated differently because I am young?
