CrystalMemberThis assumption springs from a combination of ignorance, racism, and a very cynical view of marriage in general. If a woman of color marries a white man, it’s because she wants to ‘marry up’. If a man of color marries a white woman, it’s because he wants a trophy. God forbid loving, spiritual reasons should have anything to do with the choice of partner. These kind of people assume all marriages take place for some kind of material gain and also assume all people of color are poor.

MissyParticipantWhy when I’m with my husband (he’s white ) do I hear some people (black and white) say I’m with him for the money? I earn far more than my husband.

Roberta29557ParticipantMissy, I think rude comments like that are based on the wrong assumption that all whites make more money than blacks in the United States.
