justin26860Participanti don’t think so. i always think of blacks as having naturally smoother complexions. blemishes on white skin stick out way more, so i’m more inclined to think the opposite. i think whoever you’re talking to is either trying to provoke you or has serious class (in both senses of the word)and race issues.

MishaParticipantDo most men view dark-skinned women as dirty-looking? I have heard many black men say that light-skinned women look cleaner. I have also overheard many Latino men describe black women as dirty and unclean. There also seems to be a global preference among men for a woman who is at least lighter than themselves. Is dark skin being viewed as dirty one of the reasons for this?

Gregory-H21599ParticipantI’m a fairly light skinned black male and I don’t think that dark skin looks dirty. In fact, more than seeing black men go for women who are lighter than they are, I see light skinned black men go after darker skinned women and vice-versa.

NatisshaParticipantI believe some ethnic groups think that way because that is what the white men say. First off, there are some black men who rather have white, asian or mixed because they could push them around. I am mixed and some black men think they could push me around. No I am not cleaner than any other woman and inner beauty is what matter. Yes, intra-racial problem are a big question to a lot of black women, but mind you, where did those black men come from? A black woman and to them making fun of their mamma is the worst insult of all. Especially if still living with them.

ACC25103ParticipantI’m not sure where you’re getting what sounds to me like some very bizarre ideas. Where did you get the idea that there is a ‘global preference for lighter skinned women’? Actually in many cultures, including American Indian ones and the African ones of your own ancestry, lighter or pale skin is universally considered a sign of BAD HEALTH or sickliness, not beauty. Even among many Scandinavian peoples, they prefer darker or deeply tanned people to lighter ones. Jimi Hendrix said he never had so many women chasing after him or thinking of him as handsome as he did in Sweden, and this was before he was famous. Most of the places where people think of lighter skinned women as more beautiful are, in fact, those that are the most scarred by colonialism or racism. And that belief was (and sometimes still is) promoted as a form of social control over darker skinned people by teaching them to hate themselves and their own beautiful features. There was a very popular song in Mexico a few years ago, ‘Eres Piel Morena’ or ‘You Are Brown Skinned’ that was about how the darker women of Mexico needed to realize their own beauty and not fall for the lie that dark=ugly. It is still an issue that needs to be confronted and darker women need to see they can and are as beautiful as the blue eyed blondes Hollywood and Madison Avenue shoves down our throat all the time. In fact, even they are realizing that. How else do you explain the popularity of Naomi Campbell or Jennifer Lopez?

Kristy26306ParticipantI think that is just the way society and some families inadvertantly raise thier kids when they are young. If you are taught that lighter skin, clearer eyes and straighter hair are prettier than darker skin, darker eyes and curlier hair, then you will obviously view darker women (and others in general) as ugly ,dirty or whatever else.
