When I lived in America from age 9 to 14, I was the only white girl in my class and, being exposed to African-American culture through my friends and teachers, I imitated them in speech and gestures. I moved at 14 to Japan, where there are few black people. Now that I’m 20 and in Vancouver, Canada, where I can interact with people of African descent, I really don’t know how to. Whenever I notice myself talking and acting like I learned to in America (i.e. African American), I feel embarrassed. I want to know if black people are offended if a white person speaks or acts as if part of African-American culture?
