There is definitely an equal proportion of the races when it comes to walking out in front of cars. Why? Because almost every person, regardless of age, race, or creed, that attends my university walks out into the middle of traffic without a thought (provided it’s on campus traffic). It has to do with a lot of things – one, we’re all studying for degrees and have other things on our minds, and are generally spaced out because of it – two, college students are often still at an age where they subconciously percieve themselves as being invincible. Anytime someone visits our university who is unfamiliar with us, although it really is frightening, I have to laugh when I see them suddenly have to screech the brakes to avoid some college kid – and I laugh even harder when the kid doesn’t even notice the screeching brakes (or the possible obscenities shouted out the window).

I live in the South, and I think white people cross the street in busy traffic whenever they feel like it. The streets down here aren’t near as busy as the ones up North. The reason the young kids cross the streets in busy traffic may be that there are so many cars that they have to get across whenever they can.

I work in the college town of Boulder, Colorado. With some 30,000 students during the school year, and as a professional shuttle driver myself, I can attest with certainity that a lack of respect for traffic laws crosses all racial boundaries. Several times I have had to make a panic stop for someone who just waltzes out onto the street like they own the joint, and sometimes I get flipped off for my trouble of not running them over. I wouldn’t so much as say it’s a race issue, but a maturity issue. My evidence for that statement would come from the predominance of young college students displaying this dangerous behavior. (Sidenote: perhaps the ‘invincibility factor’ found in most youngsters, of which I was also experienced, has them feeling lucky)
