Walter S.MemberI’ve noticed that some people have cracks on their tongue. Why is this?

LaurieParticipantI’m not sure of this, but I believe I read that one reason for it is a deficiency of a certain ‘B’ vitamin.

TracyMemberThese cracks may be seen as discolorations, or patches on the tongue, if it is what I think the author is asking. It is often called ‘geographic tongue’. I have such a tongue. It causes weird patches and sometime fissures in the tongue as a result of the papilla wearing off. There is no known treatment, or specific cause. But from my experience it is exacerbated by spicey and acidic foods or drinks. The bare spots can be very sensitive and hurt if I’ve eaten or drank something spicey or acidic. I notice that lemonade is the worst for me.

Daniel-TParticipantMy Dad has cracks on his tongue, and he was told that it was caused by his mouth being overly dry. The condition may also have a genetic component, because I also have cracks, although mine are not as bad as his are.

BlairParticipantIt’s nothing serious. Most people have slight cracks on their tongue. However, if it burns when you eat different foods, it could be another story. I have a friend who has severe cracks on her tongue, and every time she eats certain foods (cherries, for example) her tongue will feel like it’s on fire.

NataliParticipantI once heard a nutrition expert put cracks on the tongue down to severe lack of a certain vitamin…something like iron. It’s certainly something to see a nutritionist about anyway.
