MelissaParticipantI am from Kentucky and have quite a few confederate flags in my home. Why do a lot of black Americans see this as a racist symbol? I went to a middle school whose mascot was the Rebel and he held a Confederate flag, but a few years ago they changed it because it was offensive. I know that it is a reminder of the Civil War, but to me it stands for heritage – not hate. I am not racist and do not like people who are, but I like representing my Southern culture because to me, being from the South is something to be proud of. I have also noticed in some rap videos, rappers are now starting to wear Confederate flags as bandanas, shirts, buckles, etc. There is even a rap CD with a Confederate flag on the front of it behind the rappers. Do black Americans find this to be offensive and if so, why?
