Jessica N.ParticipantI have traveled to many different parts of the world, and everywhere I go I meet people whose greatest dream is to come to America. Why do so many people want to come here when it is so expensive and difficult to get here, the immigration process is so impossible and immigrants are not always treated well? Why America and not any other country?

Nelson-A20194ParticipantThe answer to your question is Hollywood. Also the urban “rags to riches” stories people hear from other people who have relatives in the States. The rest of the world has no idea how tough it is to “make it” in America, but what they see in movies and on TV is simply too tempting. I live this up-close in my country. People who lead absolutely comfortable lives here go to the States to chase “the American Dream,” only to come back a year later saying “home sweet home.” So Hollywood and its superb marketing of that fantastic product called the U.S.A. is the one to blame.

Larisa-M26214ParticipantThe simple answer is that people come here because life is better here. For a lot of immigrants, the US is still the land of opportunity. Here, it does not matter whether your ancestors came here on the Mayflower or whether you came to the US last year; there is almost no prejudice against recent immigrants (except illegal ones). It is also a lot more difficult to get into other countries as an immigrant. And yes, the US is still the land of opportunity. My family came here 10 years ago with nothing but the clothes on our backs; we’re now upper middle class. In any other country (and in the country that we left) we would still be living in poverty.

H.MemberDespite our many problems, America still offers far more socioeconomic opportunity and political freedom than anywhere in the developing (third) world. Our economy is also stronger than most other parts of the developed world (look at the high unemployment in much of the European union) and we are far more welcoming to immigrants than places like Japan, Germany, etc. There’s also the American ideal that our ancestors have followed for four centuries – fleeing oppression for opportunity and throwing off the shackles of the Old World. Admittedly, the current rate of immigration seems too high to sustain for long and may reduce the quality of life here if it continues.

Jan-LParticipantOne reasons a large number of people want to come to the United States freedom that U.S. citizens and residents get. In many other countries, there is no political freedom, or religious freedom, or other types of freedom. Also, living in the United States, you generally don’t have to worry about some other country trying to attack to gain some territory. As the United States is the only superpower right now, many other countries listen to it, so being part of it would be like having an older brother to beat up the bullies.
