I know it’s extremely difficult to come out and admit one is gay. Can anyone share their experience? How did you do it? How did the people around you react?

No doubt it’s difficult. And, I wouldn’t say it’s so much an event as it is a process. For me, it was scary, but I did not end up losing many friendd because of it. In fact, all of the friendships I valued were strengthened by my coming out.

Coming out to parents is tough. Unless you have a remarkably close relationship with your parents, I’d save that one until you have a few others under your belt.

The very first person I told was a good (female) friend. It was the scariest thing I’d ever done, even though I knew she’d be accepting. Four years later we have the most intensely close friendship. It’s wonderful. I have since been told it’s not uncommon for guys to be more comfortable coming out to women.

The last piece of advice I offer is that you understand why you want to come out. For me, it was a simple matter of wanting to end years of lies and be open with who I really am. I was 29, alone and scared that I’d die alone, never finding that right person. Life for me, despite a few bumps along the way, is a million times better. And I’ve been in a happy, committed relationship for four years. Life is good!
