I’ve been a fan of sumo wrestling for quite some time now. I have noticed something about them. You never see a sumo wrestler with a beard. They are always clean cut. Is this required in sumo like the sacho mage hairstyle is? Also, I have noticed that foreigners (geijin) are allowed to compete. But I have never seen a geijin wrestler whose eyes wern’t brown, or hair wasn’t black. Do sumo wrestlers have to have brown eyes and black hair?

I grew up in Hawaii, and the majority of non-Japanese sumo wrestlers come from the Hawaiian islands, specifically from mixed Samoan and Native Hawaiian (Polynesian Pacific Islander) ethnic backgrounds. They are generally taller and heavier than ethnic Japanese, but have brown eyes and black hair. The first foreign Grand Champion (Yokozuna) Akebono was 6-foot-8 and 515 pounds when he retired.

I don’t have an exact answer to your questions, but I do know that sumo wrestling is deeply based in the traditions, and traditional sum wrestlers don’t have facial hair. They also have traditional diet and trainings for sumo wrestlers…
