I am all for smokers’ rights, but why do many smokers feel the need to throw their cigarette butts out of their car windows when they’re done? Why are many (not all) so inconsiderate to litter the streets with the aftermath of their filthy habit?

I’m not a smoker, but I imagine that people who litter their cig butts think it’s cool (‘Yeah, I’m a big REBEL!’) or, because of the small size of the butt, they think it is insigificant, ignoring that fact that one study showed that 75% of highway litter is tobacco related. Perhaps they can’t see the logic that, since they would never think of littering the floors of their homes with the disgusting remnants of their drug addiction, they should give the rest of the world the same consideration. Perhaps like any drug addicts, smokers are unable to view issues dealing with their addiction rationally. Yet everywhere they go, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, these inconsiderat slobs make the world a little more tawdry, a little seedier, a little filthier. And that, unfortunately, is often the extent of their legacy.

Name : Rick29889, Gender : M, Sexual Orientation : Straight, Race : White/Caucasian, Religion : Atheist, City : Springfield, State : OH, Country : United States, Education level : Over 4 Years of College, Social class : Middle class,hey… i can’t speak for all smokers, but only for myself. as i ‘learned’ to smoke, everyone i saw smoking flicked their butts on the ground. so i did the same. the only time i wouldn’t would be when i found myself in front of a building, and saw someone sweeping; then i’d cruch it on the heel of my shoe, and throw it in the garbage. but if i was driving or walking, i’d always flick my butt. it was not until i went to visit friends in colorado that my eyes were opened to the fact that butt flicking is littering. i was in a car with a friend (also a smoker), and flicked a butt out the window. he screeched to a halt, and reamed me! not only was i polluting his fair state (no arguement there), but i was risking a pretty large fine. i don’t remember how large, and won’t exaggerate, but i was quite shocked at the amount of money. i never saw butt dumping as littering… call me stupid, slow, selfish, etc. i’m just tellin’ ya straight up. now that i do see it that way, i have broken the habit of flicking… now i just gotta kick the other crummy habit.

I think it is incredibly rude for anybody to liter, including smokers. In my opinion, if it is too much trouble for them to deal with their own butts, then they should find another habit.

I have never smoked at all so perhaps I am completely lacking in compasson. I don’t know what compels a person to want to smoke, aside from the nicotine addiction, just the way it makes you smell. Then there is the subject of the butts. There is nothing worse than sitting at an intersection and seeing a pile of butts on the ground. How truly ignorant of them. And to the reply already given about the smell of them in the car — so that makes it ok to throw them out the window? Because they smell up your car?

It’s a shame to litter, no matter if it’s cig butts or anything else! Throwing butts out is also a fire hazard in some places. On the other hand, it is irritating when there is no place to put cig butts on the ever-lessening areas outside where we are allowed to smoke. I carry a metal tin to put my butts in so I don’t have to litter and I offer it to others to dispose of theirs. It would be helpful if there were more receptacles to discard butts in. One reason people throw them out the vehicle window is that a used ashtray lessens the trade in value of an automobile. That is no excuse because there are other options, like a ashtray that fits in a cup holder.
