I just heard about a British custom related to Christmas crackers. Can anyone offer some more information on this tradition?

Nothing comes to mind other than pulling them with friends/family at the dinner table on Christmas Day. Reading the bad jokes and donning the paper hats contained therein. Were you thinking of anything more involved?

The Christmas cracker is a cardboard cylinder (like a paper-towel tube but shorter) filled with confetti, a toy of some sort (or candy, and depending on the price/quality it is usually cheap and plastic), and a paper hat. It is wrapped in bright wrapping paper and pulled open (making a popping sound similiar to a New Year’s plastic confetti-filled champagne bottle). These are often found on one’s plate at Christmas dinner, and you are to wear the hat during the meal.

Christmas Crackers are cardboard tubes wrapped in paper (about the size of a toilet paper roll). It is a tradition at Christmas dinner for two people to each pull on one end of the roll. When the cracker separates, it makes a popping sound similar to a firecracker. Inside there is a prize (similar to crackerjack prizes). Whoever gets the tube end of the cracker gets the prize. I was born in England and still do this with my family every Christmas.
