ACC24003ParticipantWhy is ‘Christian’ rock and ‘Christian’ alternative music, in my opinion, so awful? I say that not to attack their message but their complete lack of musical, vocal and lyrical talent or originality, since it’s just a very weak and lifeless imitation of ‘regular’ rock or alternative. I’m a big fan of other faith-inspired forms of music like reggae, gospel, powwow songs and some world music. Can anyone explain why ‘Christian’ rock is, frankly, so uninspiring and trite?

ACC24012ParticipantIf you reread my question, I compared the genre to other faith-based music, not secular music. I have heard the artists you list, and I consider them examples of the faults I described. Part of this may simply be differences in taste, but frankly I don’t hear anywhere near the level of emotion in Christian rock that I hear in other faith-based music. I also hear a lot of trite lyrics and copy-cat musical styles. I speculate this might be because of their comfortable or sheltered backgrounds. Do you or anyone else agree or disagree?

Chester32343ParticipantThe problemm, to me, is that people such as yourself seem to have a need to compare Christian rockers to secular rock performers. You and others can’t allow them to be who they are. The Christian stations won’t play individuals unless they fit the image they want, so you don’t hear the new or different Christian artists. DC talk, Jars of Clay, Third Day, Caedmons Call and others are very talented and gifted artists. You have to dig deeper. Don’t trust the radio station to provide the music.

JayParticipantMy answer would be the same as that for almost all modern rock music. To me, most popular music these days is so “uninspiring and trite” because most people, musicians included, have little ability to find something new, exciting, inspiring or different in themselves to express creatively in writing or music. Becasue ‘Christian’ music is solely about God, Jesus, faith or spirituality in general, I feel it tends to be lifeless and unexciting because of such a limited subject matter. Inspiring and exciting music is that which explores new territory in lyrics and content, as well as in the music itself.

DanParticipantScenes take a very long time to develop. Back in the 70’s, the hardcore punk scene (Cro Magnon, Black Flag, etc.) was nothing like it is today (though some would argue it was better back then). Back in the 70s, Rock and Roll was taboo in most Christian circles. The earliest Christian rock was closer to the Osmond Bros. than Led Zepplin, and even those types of acts caught heat from many high ranking church leaders. Christian rock has slowly but surely evolved since then. Today it can be found in every genre. I do agree there are a lot of not-so-good acts out there in the Xian scene. But there are a lot of good ones, too. I could run out of space in this posting trying to list all the ones that I think are genuinely good acts. They just don’t get much press, as the majority of Xian youth are more ‘Backstreet Boys’ than ‘Radiohead’, if you know what I mean.

MeghanParticipantyou havn’t the same religion as us, so when you listen to it, you think, how could people want to listen to that, when we think the same thing about your indian rituals. there is nothing wrong with the way that you believe, so there is nothing wrong with the way in which we believe either!
