JoanneParticipantIndian women display their marital status through the ‘tika’ over their forehead. But I was told by someone that Chinese women display theirs through the style of their hairdo. Single women always have plaits, while married women do their hair in ‘buns.’ I find it quite hard to believe, as her sources came from Chinese movies she saw. Is it true?

Cynthia31764ParticipantI think that’s only the case with peasant girls and women.

Y.K.MemberIt’s true. In my grandmother’s time, unmarried girls wore their hair in plaits, while married women wore them up. But you have to keep in mind that this has not been practiced for some time, and I don’t know of any Chinese community out there still following this tradition (but maybe I’m wrong – we don’t in Malaysia, anyway). I’d like to hear from anyone who can tell me the origin or reason for this custom, though.

Kris26228ParticipantThey did do that in some places. Keep in mind that Chinese movies aren’t necessarily accurate, and that China has very diverse peoples. I think that was my grandmother’s generation and earlier. She’s like 80 now. I’ve seen it in old photographs; it hasn’t been practiced for 50 years.
