I haven’t seen this posted anywhere else, so here goes: I was watching a show on The History Channel about the ‘oldest profession,’ and it made me wonder what women in this profession have to say about differences between men and women. Given the fact that they see people at their base level and unguarded state, what insights, if any, have they gained about human nature? I once read a book about women who were exotic dancers, and they said that what you see going on in strip clubs is a microcosm of American society: Classism, gender conflicts, racism, etc. Since we can all post at this site anonymously, is anyone out there involved in this occupation in any facet (dancing, phone sex, escorting, massage parlours, etc.) who would comment on these topics? I look forward to responses.

I stripped for nine months, and one of the most disappointing discoveries I made is that racism runs rampant inside the club walls. The black women I worked with had a difficult time getting hired (they had to return to the club repeatedly to try to get applications/interviews, whereas the white women were snatched up immediately by the management) and had a difficult time acquiring customers. Another interesting discovery I made was that I made money faster and more easily the less I spoke with customers; it occurred to me that they wanted a dumb little young thing next to them rather than anything resembling intelligent conversation. I suppose strip clubs really are a distorted close-up of human evolution – males with the most money and goods attract the most dancers; the dancers with the hourglass figures and pretty faces (and youth) attract the most customers. Gender conflicts were always high because the management did practically nothing to protect the dancers, so you had a room of dozens of drunk men trying to get the most for their buck (grabbing, lying, unwelcomed touching) and sober, near-naked women trying to get as much money as they could with the least amount of compromise. Strippers warn each other about who is ‘cheap’ or ‘grabby,’ while men point each other to the clubs with the prettiest girls or sleaziest table dances (a little like a stereotypical dating scene, huh?).

I am a phone sex operator. Perhaps I don’t get the chance to see societal dynamics play out in exactly the same way a dancer or escort would, but I know enough about the demographics of my client base to plan my business accordingly. 99.9 per cent of my customers are white males. Therefore, although I’m not white, my character is. It’s obvious now that it was the right choice when I ‘created’ her, although I didn’t know what to expect at the time. I thought that if the sexual dynamics often so prevalent in society were echoed there, I’d not want to participate in what I felt was the inevitable ‘black woman as manish sexual dynamo’ stereotype. Since my clients assume that I look the way I say that I look, and since my voice gives no hints as to my ethnicity, especially with my voice filtered through my character’s voice, I don’t really get any exposure to racism directly. I have noticed that among the fetishes some clients have are a fascination with black male sexuality. Some are very titilated with the idea of my white character having been involved with black men. Those who are involved often fantasize about seeing their wives being screwed by a large black man. Some with homosexual fantasies talk about being forced to satisfy a black man who has a very large penis. Usually, because of my own distaste for the stereotype of the hyper-sexual ‘big black buck,’ I tell them I haven’t ever been with a black man. I don’t want to perpetuate society’s perverse racial undercurrent. With regard to gender, class or sexual orientation, I’m not sure how that plays in. All any of my clients have is my voice, and that’s all I have of them. I don’t know where else they fit in.

I was a prostitute for about a year. I made a lot of money, and it wasn’t too bad. The main drawback is that sex becomes work for you and you lose interest in it. Kind of like if you worked at a donut shop, you’d get really tired of donuts. I learned that our system of laws is ridiculous, and our Puritanical laws are insane. I don’t think anyone should become a prostitute – it’s pretty degrading really – but I don’t think the government should arrest consenting adults, either. That’s just nuts.

I can’t speak on the topic of male/female issues, but I’ve learned quite a bit in my three years as a whore (I actually like to call myself ‘whore’ – I have a very pleasant attitude about my hobby, and it really helps break the ice). Most of my clients are sincere, genuine people. They’re also very diverse in their opinions and experiences. It’s taught me the value of individual freedom and learning how to use your own experiences to make yourself a better person. I used my phone-pitch experience to help me through job interviews (figure out what the client wants, answer the question accordingly). I’ve also been blatantly lied to, stiffed, threatened and harassed, but thankfully never really hurt. Every experience is a learning opportunity, and it’s much easier to see trouble coming after you’ve been hit by it once already. (I’d love to write a book about my experiences, but I’m still having new ones.)

I have danced on and off for 11 years. I work at a very upscale club in Atlanta. Atlanta has a large black population, and that owners try to keep a mix of girls of all races to appeal to guys of all types and fantasies. I am Asian and there are certain men to whom Asian women are very attractive – rarely Asian guys, they like big blondes as a general rule. What the management is mostly concerned with is that the customer base doesn’t become too black – once a club (strip or otherwise) gets a reputation as ‘black’ then the white customers stop coming. The race of the dancers doesn’t make that much difference – lots of black guys like white dancers. By being upscale (expensive) they keep out the lower income guys, which tends to be more black than white. Businessmen and professionals of any color tend to not like to socialize in clubs frequented by either streetier or rednecky types of any race. It think it is more about class than race.
