Jon AllenParticipantWhy is it that above a certain age Americans become so tied up with what happens at the gas pump? Don’t tell me that we are looking to invade Iraq to combat terrorism, as it’s obvious by now that Saudi Arabia and others are better breeding grounds for terrorism. Don’t tell me that it is for the Kurds, as they will suffer severely if a war breaks out. Don’t tell me that it is for Israel, as their minister of defense is trying to stop Bush, along with most of Europe. So why are so many Americans behind Bush? Is it thier stock portfolios?

ShirleyAveryParticipantI agree with your assessment. Sadly, war is usually good for the local economy, but the death and maiming of soldiers is too high a price. I think Bush and his cronies, including the Blackwater-related VP are in it for the money for no-bid! govt. contracts. I hope they burn in hell for it! Hopefully, Obama will be deal with problems more humanely or intelligently. As to why so many Americans backed Bush, it’s hard to say. He and the other Repubs lied their asses off, saying what people wanted to hear, scared people about terrorism and did dirty tricks to steal the 2004 election. Just Curious

DotParticipantA lot of older Americans, especially those with parents who lived through WWII were taught this doctrine of American Exceptionalism that now most people view as a form of bigotry. But, habits die hard and folks still think that our lifestyle (big cars, cheap gas, mass consumerism and unilateral intervention internationally) is a birth right for beating the Axis powers. PS, Bush destroyed our stock portfolios as well (with a lot of help from Reagan).
