Why do black Americans wait at least a week after the date of death before burying the deceased? This seems to be the practice at least in my part of the country. Whites bury their dead in about three days.

Many blacks depend on their insurance policies to finance a decent burial. These policies range from $5,000 to $10,000 and are fairly easy to obtain, even if one’s health is bad. The insurance company does not always distribute these funds to the relatives in a timely manner; hence the wait. Also, my extended family prefers to celebrate the life of the deceased person prior to arranging any funeral services.

I have to admit I’ve never seen a significant difference concerning races and funerals. Things usually vary according to belief systems. I suspect there just happens to be a large population of certain religions in your area. Just because someone is Irish doesn’t mean they will automatically have a ‘wake’. However, the majority of Catholic Irish-heritaged people I know do have wakes. So I always tie things together not by race, but by religion.

My mother works at a funeral home. It really has nothing to do with money. The longer white people sit out after they are dead, they start changing colors. Black people don’t change colors as fast. We have different pigments in our skin that cause us to stay the same longer.

People do things according to religion. Why was the Pope buried four days after his death? Religious statutes – not because he was Polish! Skin color has nothing to do with the rate of one’s burial. And not all blacks depend on monies received from insurace policies. Besides, you can fax a death certificate and get a check the next day.

It has been my observation that whites bury as soon as arrangements can be conveniently made, whereas most blacks, here anyway, are buried on the weekend.

In my family a lot of us are spread across the East Coast; therefore, it takes time for those able to attend to get the time off work and travel.
