CorieParticipantCan someone explain this to me? I can be talking to an educated, middle-upper-class black person and carrying on a perfectly normal conversation with them. But then a second black person walks up. Immediately this intelligent, articulate person begins talking in ‘Ebonics’ and generally sounding like they have never graduated from fifth grade. Why do they do that? Their unimpressive ‘inside’ language certainly does nothing to underline my initial feelings of intellectual respect. In fact, it makes me wonder who the real person is: the one who fits into the grown up world or the one who acts like they are in a Spike Lee film. Or do they think that their black friends can’t understand them or will judge them if they talk ‘normal’? I have lost respect for a number of black people who have done this in my presence. I don’t have two completely separate personalities based upon the race of the person I am speaking with. And I have never noticed this even once with any other race. Why do some black people think this is normal behavior?
