KristinaMemberWhy is it that every time there is an article or a news report regarding a certain element of our society, whether it is crime, drugs, sex, disease, etc., they ALWAYS break it down by race, and word things in such a way to make it seem like African Americans are the ones that suffer the most? For example, in regards to HIV/AIDS statistics, it is true that blacks are contracting the disease at a faster rate than other groups. However, most don’t realize that LESS THAN 1 PERCENT OF America’s 14 million blacks have AIDS/HIV. If the media stated the statistic in this fashion it wouldn’t have the same effect as saying, ‘Black women are the number one group to get AIDS’ or whatever. The way the media states things, one would think every single black person is a breeding ground for HIV, and it isn’t true. A few hundred thousand blacks have AIDS, but when there are millions of blacks in the U.S. that don’t have that AIDS, it is safe to say MOST blacks don’t have that disease, but the media paints a different picture. Other elements of black culture are often skewed too. It is true that teenage pregancy is rampant in our community, sadly, but what about the millions of black girls in this country that aren’t another statistic? And why aren’t the numbers of white girls who have babies out of wedlock emphasized as much as black? Many white Americans argue that neither they nor our culture consists of the rather barbaric racism evident in our past history. And although this is true to an extent, if they are to FULLY release themselves of racial prejudice, why do THEY have to keep throwing race up in every single aspect of life? Why can’t they have a news report and say blah, blah, blah percentage of HUMAN BEINGS have whatever?! Truly being free of prejudice means you view someone that looks different than you as equal; they are as human as you. And if they, the human being does something that is wrong, it is because THEIR character is flawed, not the race they come from. Until there is a day when there is no need to even mention, ‘Black’, ‘White’, ‘Asian’, ‘Hispanic’, ‘Mixed,’ ‘Arab’, ‘Middle-Eastern’, or ‘Indian,’ in regards to anything, our culture will always be racist, and anyone who thinks otherwise is just in plain denial.
