D.MemberWould you rather be called ‘Black’ or ‘African-American’ (or something else…)? I understand that there are most likely individual preferences that people have, but if you don’t know someone’s preferences, which should you use? I often get the idea that people think ‘African-American’ is more PC, but sometimes it almost feels like people use this term when they are more uncomfortable and feel awkward, not knowing what to call people… Sort of as a way of showing how PC they are but then really just distancing themselves from the subject. I wonder if it’s sort of like the difference between calling people homosexual vs. gay (I’ve heard the argument that people who are more homophobic tend to say ‘homosexual,’ making it almost a clinical term, as opposed to ‘gay’ which is more of an identity.)
