I’m so glad I found a place to ask this: Why do so many African Americans walk in the street instead of on the sidewalk?

I think it comes with not particularly caring which way to walk, as long as you get to your destination. I notice it when I walk off the city bus: black people rush right into the street, regardless of walk signals. I always wait because I don’t want to be ‘tire food’ for cars.

I’ve often wondered the same thing. It seems some aren’t worried at all about being hit by a car. I’d like to take this a step further. I’ve often wondered why someone driving will stop in the middle of a busy city street to chat with a friend who was walking without regard to other traffic. I’ve witnessed this cause needless traffic jams and near accidents endless times. Can someone explain the apparent lack of concern for their safety, and lack of respect for others?

Because alot of black people think they are entitled to do whataver they want since our white society has ‘oppressed’ them.

Sometimes, depending on the hood im in it just feels safer. Plus sometimes the sidewalk is broken up or there is something on it that i would have to walk around, over or through. Its more comfortable to just walk in the street.

I’m not sure of the context you’re talking about, but in some neighborhoods it’s done as a safety thing: if you’re in the middle of the street it’s harder for someone to jump you. Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato
