I am not Black. I am a White female who talks to herself constantly! And yeah, I often answer myself or carry on an entire conversation alone. I don’t carry a cell phone in public. (Unless there is an emergency, it seems rather rude to me.) I suspect the reason I talk to myself so much is because I am a stay at home mom who also works from home. Sometimes I just want to hear another adult’s voice even if it is my own. LOL Or to talk to someone who won’t ignore me or ‘talk back.’ I’ve seen plenty of people – not just Black people – who talk to themselves. So, it’s not cultural. I’m very intelligent and my husband and I, while not rich, are rather well off, so I can’t believe it’s socio-economic either. Perhaps you just notice it when someone who is ‘different’ from yourself does it?

i don’t think it has anything to do with race..its the job they have. i have worked with every color of pharmacist in this world black, white, hispanic, asian you name it and they ALL talk to themselves. But I have to say the one who used to talk to herself the most was a black lady i mean she had whole conversations with herself. She’d ask a question and answer it herself in the same breath…she wasn’t all there though :o)

I’ve noticed it too and don’t think it’s someone on an invisible cell. It seems to more often be older black people and more like a running commentary on something than an actual conversation. Like in a store being near an old lady shopping alone, talking about how cute a blouse might look on her grandchild? If I was black would I perceive that she’s talking to me?

I am an upper middle class Black woman who grew up in a diverse socio-economic culturally mixed area of the city. I have never experienced in all of my 42 years this strange phenomenon you talk about. I have asked my White, Latino and Asian friends the same question. No one has experienced this.

I’m a nurse and over the years have observed nurses talk to themselves all the time, and have joked that it should be taught in nursing school. But I also have noticed the general population is increasingly talking to themselves. I hear it everywhere. I’ve gotten to the point that if I’m trying to make a point to myself or trying to remember something, it’s not enough to think it, I have to say it out loud. If you talk to yourself, you always have a captive audience, and no one will argue with you. I’m glad to see it’s not just ‘crazy’ ppl talking to themselves anymore. Or maybe I’ve just joined the ranks of crazy ppl.

I’ve noticed the same phenomenon. Sure, I’ve heard white people talking to themselves before also, but I notice black men doing it more often by a wide margin. I assumed it was because they wanted a certain amount of attention.

Has to do with alchohol use and / or keeping people at bay. It is a common tool used in prison when you are scared and do not want any interaction with people. Generally, speaking to ones self tends to keep all persons at bay.
