Why is it that I always see so many black guys who pimp up an old ‘granny car’? I mean big, old, worn-out cars with spinner rims, etc. Is that just in Oklahoma, or does anyone else know what I’m talking about?

Ok, well I do know what your tlaking about but I also know that it’s not only black people that do this. In Cleveland and surrounding areas, I have seen many white people do this to their cars, so I believe that it is not a race issue it is just personal preference

I think it’s because most black people come from tougher backgrounds and, when it’s a privilege to have a car in the first place, you ‘roll it till the wheels fall off.’ It’s sort of like making the best of what you have, showing off what you can get, and still staying true to the hood by making that otherwise crappy car a soul-masterpiece. It’s kind of like when white guys raise their trucks 5 feet off the ground, or Latinos lower their cars to the floor, or Asians trick out Hondas.

I’m not sure that ONLY black guys pimp out granny cars. I know that in the D.C. metro area this isn’t the case. It is a matter of what is affordable – to young people especially. Some kids have mommy and daddy to buy them cars when mommy and daddy have the money. But when the funds aren’t there. it’s up to the kid in need to find an affordable vehicle. So in Oklahoma maybe it is the division of classes you are seeing, not limited to but not excluding race.

Black guys pimp up their rides because it’s all within the hip hop culture, where the big thing is to pimp up an oldies car and make them better than the modern ones. It’s happening all over the world, and not only are the black guys doin’ it – all other races, male and female, are pimpin’ their rides.

Trying to make an old, worn-out car into a cruiser or hot rod doesn’t seem to be something that just one race does. I’m white, but I happen to have a Dodge Dart parked in my carport with large polished aluminum wheels and a lowered stance. Sometimes race does seem to influence particular tastes, such as specific models or particular features, but the same can be said for clothing and other fashions. 20-inch ‘spinner’ wheels and General Motors G-bodies have become associated with hip-hop culture, for example. And somebody who wants to go racing is more likely to put on Center Line drag wheels or Kosei K1’s than Dayton wire wheels that are so large the car has to be lifted to fit them.

For the same reason whites, Latinos and Asians buy beat-up Hondas and put rims, spoilers and mufflers on them. You take what you can get and try to make the best of it.

What you’re describing is pretty common. Many times, these kinds of cars are hand-me-downs, personal projects, or are used simply because they still run – especially if the people getting them reside in large cities or ghettos. This is because buying new cars or even relatively recent used cars isn’t an option for many of the people you see doing this.

For others (like recent fans of rap and hop hop) it’s part of the ‘pimping’ image. These cars were made in the style the original ‘pimps’ of the ’70s were familliar with. Pimping rides is part of the fun of making these cars ‘ownable’ and ‘cool’ again. They’re pretty easy to customize yourself due to their construction. I remember people making these cutomizations even when I was very little. They pimped these same cars in the ’70s. They’re also easy to repair, according to my grandfather. Besides, many of these guys probably have fond memories of growing up riding around in cars simillar to them. I can’t think of many other African-American families even up to the ’80s and even early ’90s who didn’t have a car like that at one time or another either belonging to their parents or some member of thier extended family. To many blacks, in my experience, these types of cars have been the quintessential rides.

Restoration of older cars has always been a thing with guys of all races, Of late it has just come down to females customizing their rides. Have you ever watched ‘PIMP MY RIDE ON TV’ ? Most of the people there are not people of color. The newer the car the more costly it is to repair because of technology. One would best get one and hold on to it for the sake of easy and in-expensive repair.

I believe that ride pimping has nothing to do with economics (as in using an old or already purchased car and simply fixing it up versus buying new) as opposed to individuality and perosnality and popularity which is most often displayed by men. Male peacocks do not have those gorgeous plumes to attract other male peacocks, they are grandiose to attract the female who wants a man with flair. Typically, the acoutrements of ‘pimping’ a car cost far more than the car itself, so it isn’t that they are being ‘cheap’, they are being flashy. I believe the flash is in order to ‘stand out’ from the pack of other men who may own cars JUST LIKE his. If 50 men go buy a new, black Lexus Coupe and they all drive them off the lot and paid exactly the same price for it, the one guy who goes and puts non-dealer chrome weels on it and customizes the interior will get a second glance over the other 49 who are straight factory-built. It’s a way not to drive the exact same car as another guy. Black men probably tend to do this more because this is an area in which they can stand out more without having to battle wits (not saying they are unintelligent or anythng). Remember, the female peacock doesn’t care that the male doesn’t know Algebra. He’s flashy and an individual above the rest. Whereas Black men may not be ‘given’ a level playing ground on every other aspect of life (i.e. education, job market), they can buy wheels and chrome accessories just like every other man. Using an old car simply shows that they want to improve on a classic canvas. It’s also hip-hop related. Women are attracted to these tyes of guys, so men who aren’t entertainers emulate their woman-seducing flair (adding their own sense of style) and put themselves in a ‘higher’ bracket of attractiveness to ordinary women.

I see more Mexicans & Caucasions ‘pimp up’ cars than I do blacks. Besides it’s cheaper to pimp up a granny car anyway.

It really depends. My husband has ‘pimped up’ his van in that it is very ethnic and most people are suprised to see a little fat white lady driving it when I’m driving, but our other cars he just keeps really nice even though they’re older. Most of it is just that they like to have nice looking rides. Some of it is trying to show off. I’m always impressed that black men tend to keep their cars looking much nicer than whites do. I’d say it has more to do with self-pride.

No, this is common everywhere–in the United States, at least. ‘Ghetto cruisers’ are judged by their size. And of course it’s the old ‘granny cars’–the 69 El Dorados of the world–that are the big boats that take up two parallel spots.
