Are African Americans more sensitive than other people about someone not identifying their babies’ proper gender, and if so, why? Twice while I was in retail management, I mistook a baby girl for a baby boy and on both occasions was gently chastised for getting it wrong — it wasn’t hostile but I felt as though I’d ‘hit a nerve’. I think it is quite difficult to tell baby boys from baby girls up to about one year of age regardless of race, unless there is some distinct article of clothing, hair bow, baseball cap, etc. And no, I do not think ‘all black people look alike’; honestly, people of all races — including my own — ‘blur together’ to me until I get to know them (within obvious categories of sex, age group, hair color, body build, and so on).
