This past summer I went on a family vacation to Maui, Hawaii, and encountered Polynesian people. From an anthropological standpoint, I always believed that black people were the tallest and strongest people. Yet when I saw these Polynesian people (specifically the men) in Maui, they were humongous; just as tall and even bigger. I’m curious: Do Polynesians have any black descent in them? I am clueless on their ancesteral history, but seemingly, they share some black features.

If you visited only Hawaii, the odds are that you ran into very few full-blooded Polynesians (Kanaka Maoli – blooded native.) Some estimates put less than 5 percent of the population of Hawaii as full-blooded native. And some of these people are limited to one small island that is protected. The original Polynesians come from the South Pacific and, some say, New Zealand. Hawaii itself has lots of American and Asian influence and bloodlines. Surely there is African heritage present, but I don’t think it is dominant in the mix. Of more interest to me is your perception that Africans are the tallest and strongest people on Earth. Have you ever been to Sweden? And how come it is always Slavic countries that win all the weightlifting contests in the Olympics?

I think your idea that black people are the tallest and strongest is mistaken. The records for height and weightlifting in the Guinness Book of Records are held by non-blacks. Besides, race is socially, not biologically, defined. All of us trace our ancestry to Africa.

Obviously, you are knowledgble Polynesian ancestry. Could you please recommend me some websites and or books where I can learn more about the subject. As far as my belief of black people being the tallest and strongest, please just ignore that I said it. My enquiry was more about Polynesians than black people, so there is no need (for You) to dwell on it. Furthermore, I have not been to Sweden and I do not plan to go there. And I do not know why it is always Slavic countries that win weight lifting contests in the Olympics. Maybe you should post that question in the forum!

I think the content of my question was somewhat confusing (to you). I was not trying to get the point across of my seemingly false belief that black people are the tallest and strongest people. I was, however, inquiring about the ancestral descent of Polynesian people. I noticed some physical features in them that I see in black people as well. I was hoping that someone would enlighten me to Polynesians’ ancestry by recommending a web site, book, etc. I am fully aware that all of us trace our ancestry to Africa. Furthermore, I couldn’t care less about records for height and weightlifting in the Guinness book set by blacks or non-blacks. I would like to learn about the ancestry of Polynesians. I apologize for my question’s lack of clairity.

The word, ‘polynesian,’ in itself means ‘many races.’ It’s obvious from looking at most Polynesian people (ie. Samoans, Tongans, etc) that they are of African descent, among other things. Because of slavery, and even before it, Africans ended up in all parts of the world (even Europe) and intermixed.

Maori in New Zealand migrated to this country around 800 AD. They believe that they orignated from a place caled Hawaiki that was further north in the Pacific. Debate amongst antropologists and historians still rages over where this homeland might be. Whaever the case, it is highly unlikely that Polynesians originated here. One theory that I have read about why many Polynesians are so big is that they travelled long distances by sea to reach the countries they currently live in. Some of the weaker (smaller) travellers died on the journey. Those who were able to store food as fat most efficiently tended to survive. Thus, their descendants tend to be bigger than average. Most Maori in NZ are no bigger than anyone else. However, a disproportionate number of Maori, Tongan and Samoan people excel at sport in this country (particularly rugby).

Polynesians did not come from Africa. The original Polynesians, the Lapita people, (named after Lapita pottery found in a trail leading from south east Asia to Polynesian islands)travelled by boat from island to island, starting in South East Asia and working their way through Melanesia and on to Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. Groups of people would go out on boats looking for land and that is why some people believe Polynesians are so big. Only the big and strong could survive that long and tough of a journey. From Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, they went to New Zealand and Hawai’i. Some people think Polynesians travelled to South America while looking for land and brought back with them sweet potatoes because sweet potatos are not a native fruit among the Polynesian islands.

In answer to your question about Hawaiian Black conections. Have a look at a picture of King Kamehameha I and Queen Liliuokalani. You will have your answer.
