May i ask what ‘baggage’ you are referring to? that baggage of our African ancestor got you where you are today. If youre not white. it was the African Americans who fought for our rights and while doing that helped all minorites. so when you say baggage i hope you realize that that baggage is WELL worth carrying!!!! to us as African Americans

who wants to be on a team that seems to be losing? especially not a loser!! most hispanics from african decent (‘black’ ‘molutto’ or what ever they choose to call themselves) have not been been exposed to the uprising of the AFRICAN race like here in america, haiti, even Europe, (although those were good examples of why the spainards HAD to grant freedom to the africans). For the most part they have only been exposed to spain’s mentality which was supressive and racist, they only saw them as slaves, and savages, inferior on all levels, intelligence and especially SPIRITAULLY. Africans had to hide their gods they worshiped by giving them catholic faces and names, once again watering down the roots! White man having sex with the africans was veiwed as giving these BLACK jungle people some molutto (lighter color) basicly watering down the race! being black was veiwed as inferior in these latin countries, and after years and years of this treatmnent a certain spirit in the afro-spanish has been broken! a certain connection to their african sisters and brothers through out the world has been strained. Now whether they are to weak to stand up for their ancestors or to ignorant to aknowlegde they are even a part of them —- which ever it is, the whole situation is just another example of the EVIL & horrible crime the white man has committed on the African race ………. but in spite of all that, they can’t shut out the hue of our skin, queit the beat of our drums or stop the warriors in our soul!!!!only the strong will survive —— A REAL AFRICAN!! they fear what they can’t conquar, hate what they dont understand, i guess it’s just an inferior man!!

I am not hispanic or black but I think that a lot of it might have to do with the fact that Hispanics have a culture that is still very strong in our society. Many black people have no ties to any traditions or language, where many hispanics are fluent speakers and know about the customs of their people.

I am a ‘Black Hispanic’ and the first thing I say when I am asked my nationality is that I am Black, and I think that is because I was mainly exposed to the Black culture. I know what I am and I am proud to be hispanic as well as black, but I think I associate myself with those I feel I have a stronger connection with.

People like this are basically ignorant of history and the impact of the african people on their culture and race.much of hispanic cooking , music, and culure stems from african decendants but as we know, black is the most hated race on the planet. And they prove this by discriminating against blacks and themselves.

I am so glad you brought this up. I believe that thanks to America it has to do with the general belief that anything associated with black is negative and the last thing they want to be is that. In turn, many afro-latin people rather identify with their native american and or spainard roots because of the negative connotation about being black especially in America. Thats not a good thing to be. Unfortunately, its everywhere you look, from the reference to ‘black friday’, ‘black reign’, watch televison, look in magazines and even in the dictionary its not cool to be black, at least not too black (speaking of skin color). And even black people themselves have issues with darker shades of black people in past generations due to the negativity associated with the being black. The few afro-latin people who do know and have had the opportunity to explore their roots and know their strength tend to embrace them wholeheartedly. ie father (belizan) I don’t say scream oh, im black just to hear oneself speak, I mean know and recognize how that contributes to being you. From your wavy to kinky hair, your complexion, features and structure are attibutes that dont just happened, its a product of the african/native american/conquistador mix why deny it its a beautiful thing. Still, while the afro-latin peoples believe what America and many of our ignorant ones have to say , watch white america continue to try and be like us. Botox injections trying to save them from wrinkles, collegen injections trying to mimick our full lips, and getting tans all year round trying to stay colored. Its just a matter of ignorance its really up to us educate one another so we understand why its really okay to be black.

A common myth that many Hispanics believe is that Hispanic is a race. In fact, Hispanic is no more of a race than ‘German’ or ‘French’. It’s just a general ethnic classificaiton, used to refer to anyone with even a drop of Iberian ancestry. In many schools and government forms, ‘Hispanic’ is given as a racial option – this has lead to Hispanics believing that they are a separate race that doesn’t fit into the ‘white’ or ‘black’ category, when in reality this is both uninformed and ignorant. You are correct, that most Dominicans are indeed black. However, they feel that they need to identify with other Hispanics rather than blacks.
