How did Samoans get so big? I am built like a blacksmith, yet the average Samoan guy makes me look like a runt! I am most impressed. Is there a traditional folkloric explanation within Samoan culture as to how they got bigger than everyone else? Is there a genetic explanation? Any insight is much appreciated.

I have noticed that Hawaiians produce very large men, too. Hawaiians are the most common foreigners to compete in professional sumo. “Koniski” was from Hawiii, and he was 6-2 and at his heaviest weighed 600 pounds. “Akebono” who is of sumos top rank (Yokozuna) is 6-8 and weighs around 500-plus pounds. And what about pro wrestler “Yokozuna,” who was 6-2 and weighed nearly 600 pounds. I reckon black men in general are slightly bulkier and more defined than whites.

I just stumbled across this site accidentally. I read the comment by a Pentecostal Christian man asking why my Samoan people are so big. 1. There are many factors as to why Samoans or Polynesian people are bigger than the rest. I believe it’s in our genes. God created us this way whether science chooses to accept this or not. 2. Without the unhealthy lifestyle and fatty foods that Samoans have taken accustomed to over the centuries, Samoans in general are very built and well proportioned people. Once seafaring navigators who could read the stars and find their destination without fail, Samoans only lived on food from the land, air and sea; they had great massive bodies built for such voyages. Nowadays Samoans are plagued with the fatness of KFC and McDonald’s fried foods galore. You only have to look at Samoans in the USA and think ‘Heck’ they are bigger than the Samoans in New Zealand! It has been proven, however, by scientific research that Samoan, Tongan and Fijian people process muscle mass, which is natural. It doesn’t mean they don’t need to go to the gym or exercise, it just means we have to be wise in maintaining healthier lifestyles. It also means keeping fit! Samoans in general are blessed with height and good physiques. So how did Samoans get so big? Try going round to your Samoan mates houses for dinner – Sunday lunch after church and you will see why. soifua!

I don’t know if it is indeed true, but I read somewhere the possibility why Samoans are huge. The article said there is a genetic basis, natural selection if you will. In the past, in order to be King, you had to be LARGE, and the larger the better. Since this genetic trait was deemed desirable, those who were inherently large passed on their genes. Where would the NFL be if it weren’t for this? I know they can snap me in two with their pinkies.

The reason Samoans are big is due to genetics, and the types of food they eat. If you want to become big and tuff like us Samoans, live in Samoa and do what they do.

Tofa! I am new to yforum. I got to teach a year on Tutuila, 5 mi. from Pago Pago. I took my middle school class to a local mall, Laufou, to purchase matching lava lavas (wrap arounds). I asked the clerk how much material we needed. She indicated that I (the small palagi– white guy) needed a couple feet. She then raised her voice to declare that the “fat boys back there needed much more.” I knew one student was especially sensitive, so I turned to console him, but no… He and the other boy are beaming. In Samoa, “Fat is where it’s at!” Even married women seemed to take pride in their girth, as it indicated that they were well cared for. Fa soifua!
