J-BilbreyParticipantIn my experience, it seems that many East Indians feel they are superior to the rest of the races in America. I understand that all races have prejudice, but why does it seem to be so prevalent in East Indians?

L-WherryParticipantIf, as you say, most East Indians consider themselves smarter than other ethnic groups, then they qualify as racists. The notion that East Indians feel that they are intellectually ‘superior’ to others is a bigoted mindset. If this mindset influences how they relate to others, then they are, in every sense of the word, racist.

Ranjit SinghMemberNow, I believe the question was ‘are East Indians racist?’ Well of course some are racist because of what their parents told them, i.e. bad things about black people. For example, ‘Don’t go outside, some Black person might get you!’ Of course, racism can also come from experience. I’ve had a lot of bullies in high school who happened to be Black. I observed many Asians who were teased by Black people making fun of their language. So anybody can be a racist, whether it be from what your parents told you or what you yourself experienced.

JasonParticipantLet me first say I am not East Indian. You say it ‘seems’ that Indians ‘feel’ they are superior. How do you know this? By the sound of your comments, I’d venture to say that in your experience, you haven’t met more than a handful of these people and couldn’t list even one as a friend or anything more than a casual acquaintence.

John29303ParticipantIndians have the longest racial discrimnation history in the world. They have had a caste system for thousands of years. Most Indians coming to the United State came from upper castes, so they discriminate against other people, especially people who have darker skin than theirs. Sadly, as I know, Indians are not more intelligent than other people, even though most of them coming here were privileged in India.

Roger29612ParticipantI am East Indian and do not feel East Indian people are superior. Sure, some Indian people think that, just like some white people think that white people are the best, and some Hispanics think they are the best, and some African Americans think they are the best. People are the same across all races. I think that to go around saying that ‘All people of group X’ are racist is pretty racist.

BC23444ParticipantYou must understand that the East Indian culture, after all this time, remains rigid and immature. It treats females as dirt and is one of a few cultures that still maintains a caste system where they can justify treating others like garbage in order to feel superior. It is no great suprise that a majority of East Indians are closed-minded, ignorant and maintain a childish superiority complex.

Ian Ze.MemberEast indians likely seem ‘arrogant’ because many of them were born and raised in a classist British system. As a person born and raised in a commonwealth country, I am also often accused of thinking I’m better than others, here in America. I simply think this has something to do with the ‘understated’ and ‘reserved’ demeanor of those who recieve British schooling and Americans perception of the British as ‘snobby’.

DotParticipantOr a Dalit shopkeeper? The supposedly outlawed caste system in India has much to do with the attitudes amongst Indian immigrants. However, the Indian upper castes that produce engineers and physicians DO have the right to think they’re smarter than us. The average American high school graduate reads at about a sixth grade level. Upper caste Indians ARE better educated.

SamMemberI have many Indian friends. As per my information caste system is not any dipper then the “last name” that we use here in USA. India has many states. Each state have different language, culture, etc. Imagine combining all Europeans countries into one nation. Indians gets background of a person based on the last name(caste). e.g. Last name (caste) tells them more about which state person is from, what part of the state, who his relatives are, what his culture is, what his values are, etc. Lastly, Indians coming to USA are NOT from the upper caste but they can come here because they are degree holders. University gives degree to a student who have successfully completed the degree requirements and degree requirement does NOT list caste as one of the requirements.
